The legend of the beginning of ayurvedic medicine is that the one creator, Brahma, taught the theories and practices to one of the animal lords, who taught it to the Asvins-the divine twins. They taught this to the chief of the shining ones, called Indra. These were the deities of ancient verdict times.
As mankind fell victim and suffered from ailments and disease the wise men went to Indra and were taught the ancient remedies and healing cures. This is the knowledge of medicine, which is divided into 8 separate branches of the divine tree.
Kaya chikitsa is the medicine of the internal organs and workings of the body;
Baala is the study of the medicine needed in order to heal children;
Urdhvanga is the original study of the ears, nose and throat (as well as dentistry.)
All surgery, including plastic surgery, is called Salya;
The study of toxicology-stemming originally from the poison extracted from bug bites-is Danstra.
The study of what we now know as Alzheimer's and other diseases of the age advanced is called Rasayana
The study of pregnancy and gyneocology is Prasuti;
The study of mental illness and demon possession is the treatment called Graha.
The belief is that there are three elements in /of the body which cause disease. These are called Vata, Pitta and Kapha. We will talk about each one in turn.
Vata: We are all made up of space and air, with some light, water, and earth thrown in. Vata transmits perceptions to the mind and body and maintains the body's natural balance. If this energy which is used to transmit so much of the outside world to our inner selves becomes imbalanced, disease sets in.
Pitta: This is the energy responsible for vision, digestion, heat, hunger and thirst, happiness and intelligence. When this element is out of alignment, it results in depression, weight gain or loss, dehydration, apathy, and digestive problems.
Kapha disease is the result of lack of conserving and stabilizing the body, we commonly call them viruses or "bugs."
All disease is called Vyaadhi. It is the state of the being when we are full of discomfort or pain, but while all are caused by an imbalance in one of the three elements, they are treated according to the classification of the trauma:
Adhyatmika: physical and constitutional (physical injury, hereditary, and pre-disposition)Adhibhautika: contributed to environment (allergies, etc.)
Aadhidaivika: contributed to gods or spirits (demons. mental imbalances)
So how does Ayurvedic treatment differ from modern medicine? Practitioners of ayurvedic medicine believe that although antibiotics have their uses (take into consideration post surgery antibiotics to edge out infection or post transplant antibiotics which if not taken will surely cause certain death) ayurvedic doctors would rather see the balance of the body resume as quickly as possible. The drugs used in ayurveda are derived from vegetables and minerals, with plant alkaloids as the active ingredients. While western medicine relies on this basic principle, the derivatives are often chemically rather than naturally based. Before you study up on this medicine further and decide to grow your own medicinal herbs, be forewarned that where the plants grow have everything to do with their potency and ability to fight infection. You absolutely must have the right balance of alkaline and acid in your soil, as well as stringent water and light conditions. Some of the remedies might surprise you, as they are virtually the same as Grandma used. The Ayurvedic remedy for a hacking cough? Equal parts honey and the juice from a baked lemon. Grandma probably didn't know to bake the lemon to increase the acidity, but you get the point.

Holistic Health... The Art Of Curing Yourself From The Inside Out!
We do live in an amazing age. We have medications to take care of just about anything, whether it's a just headache or something more serious. However, despite the availability of all these wonderful potions, our overworked medical institutions are constantly seeing dramatic increases in serious health problems among a much higher percentage of the populations of our world.
Are these modern medical marvels actually helping or are we slowly but surely committing ourselves to a future where diseases will continue to mutate and become more and more resistant to mans medications?
Antibiotics, first used in the 1940s, were certainly, at that time, one of the great advances in medicine. However, overprescribing them has resulted in the development of bacteria that now, simply don't respond to antibiotics. And it gets worse. For some conditions medical cures have proven more harmful than the disease.
In looking for other options, people are turning back to the natural holistic approach to health and healing. The holistic health lifestyle is regaining popularity each year, as holistic principles offer practical options to meet the growing desire for enjoying a high level of vitality and well-being. Over 5,000 years ago in India and China, Ancient healing traditions stressed living a healthy way of life in harmony with nature. Socrates in the 4th century BC warned against treating only one part of the body "for the part can never be well unless the whole is well." Although the term "holism" was introduced by Jan Christiaan Smuts in 1926 as a way of viewing living things as "entities greater than and different from the sum of their parts", it wasn't until the 1970s that "holistic" became a common adjective in our modern vocabulary. Holistic health is an ongoing process.
As a lifestyle, it includes a personal commitment to be moving toward the right end of the wellness scale, so that no matter what their present state of health, people can improve their level of well-being. Even when there are temporary setbacks, movement is always headed towards a state of wellness. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that the key factors influencing an individual's state of health have not changed significantly over the past 20 years. Quality of medical care is only 10%. Heredity accounts for 18% and environment is 19%. Everyday lifestyle choices are 53%. The decisions people make about their life and habits are, therefore, by far the largest factor indetermining their state of wellness. The most obvious choices people make each day is in what they consume both physically and mentally. The cells in a person's body are constantly being replaced. New cells are built from what is available. Harmful substances or lack of the needed building blocks in the body, can result in imperfect cells unable to do what is required to keep that person healthy. Similarly, on the non-physical level, a person's mental attitudes are built from what they see and hear. The majority of illnesses and premature death can be traced back to lifestyle choices. There are the well-known dangers connected with drugs, alcohol, nicotine, and unprotected sexual activity. Less recognized is the impact of excesses in things like sugar, caffeine, and negative attitudes. Combined with deficiencies in exercise, nutritious foods, and self-esteem, these gradually accumulate harmful effects. With time they diminish the quality of the environment within the body, and set the stage for illness to take hold.
Quality of life, now and in the future, is actually being determined by a multitude of seemingly unimportant choices made everyday. When disease and chronic conditions do occur, holistic health principles are applied. The term is usually changed to holistic medicine, and additional factors are added. The healthcare professionals using the holistic approach work in partnership with their patients. They recommend treatments that support the body's natural healing system and consider the whole person and the whole situation.
A holistic approach to healing goes beyond just eliminating symptoms. For example, taking an aspirin for a headache would be like disconnecting the oil light on the dash of a car when it flashes. The irritation is eliminated, but the real problem still exists. In holistic medicine, a symptom is considered a message that something needs attention. So, the symptom is used as a guide to look below the surface for the root cause. Then what really needs attention can be addressed.
The bottom line is that ....... Holistic health treatments can, and will cure health problems such as.... Agoraphobia (Panic Attacks) ~ Insomnia ~ Yeast Infections (Candida, Thrush, Monilia) ~ Hypertension ( High Blood Pressure) ~ Acne ~ Heartburn ~ Obesity ~ Diabetes ~ Tobacco
Addiction & much more!

The Truth about Neotame, Acesulfame-K, Sucralose and Aspartame
Chemical Sweeteners

Neotame (Now found in Adkins and Hershey's products)
Neotame is the technical name for a new sweetener developed by Monsanto Chemical Corp. It is reported to be approximately 8,000 times sweeter than sugar. The chemical formula for neotame was published in the February 10, 1998 Federal Register. It is quite similar in structure to Monsanto's toxic sweetener aspartame. There have not been any legitimate, independent, long-term human studies on neotame. It has now been approved as of July 5, 2002.

Neotame has similar structure to aspartame -- except that, from it's structure, appears to be even more toxic than aspartame. This potential increase in toxicity will make up for the fact that less will be used in diet drinks. Like aspartame, some of the concerns include gradual neurotoxic and immunotoxic damage from the combination of the formaldehyde metabolite (which is toxic at extremely low doses) and the excitotoxic amino acid. Given all of the suffering being caused by Monsanto's aspartame, the prudent course would be to start out with the assumption that it may cause toxic damage or cancer from long-term exposure and conduct many thorough, long-term, and independent human studies to see the effects.
Even Monsanto's own pre-approval studies of neotame revealed adverse reactions. Unfortunately, Monsanto only conducted a few one-day studies in humans rather than encouraging independent researchers to obtain NIH funding to conduct long-term human studies on the effects of neotame. It is obvious to anyone who has thoroughly read the scientific literature on aspartame that
1) nearly 100% of the independent studies found problems with aspartame (Monsanto's studies never showed problems); and
2) that industry-funded studies bordered on fraudulent research (and a Grand Jury was convened because the officials wanted to pursue fraud charges). Much of industry-funded research related to other Monsanto products such as rBGH and toxic carpeting is similarly deceptive and poorly designed. In addition, a "research" organization led by one of Monsanto's close business parters was caught hiding a reaction-causing substance in beverages given to control groups in double-blind studies. (They did this for 13 years!)Given all of the problems with aspartame industry research and scientific abuse, it is clear that any neotame research that Monsanto, industry groups, or consultants or research friends of Monsanto have any part of should be rejected until which time more trustworthy, independent research can be conducted.
Such experiments should include independent animals studies and especially long-term (e.g., 4-5 years+) human studies in various susceptible population groups. What is likely to happen, however, is:Monsanto's subsidiary, the FDA, will accept Monsanto research as if it were legitimate. Monsanto will given money to their research consultants at various institutions (rather than NIH funding of truly independent researchers) to repeat poorly designed tests and "confirm" neotame safety. This is what they did with aspartame so that they could claim safety. The FDA and Monsanto will claim that "comprehensive" research [by Monsanto consultants] at various institutions proves that neotame is safe. There will be alot of press releases, PR statements from their friends in the research community, and from organizations they fund (e.g., IFIC, ADA, etc.). This will be a time of a massive PR blitz.
The FDA will claim to track adverse reaction reports. But they made the same claim when they told people that had received only 16 aspartame toxicity reaction reports in 1996, but refused to tell people that they stopped taking such adverse reaction reports in early 1996.
Acesulfame-K
From the book SAFE FOOD by Michael F. Jacobson, Ph.D, Lisa Lefferts and Anne Garland
From the book SAFE FOOD by Michael F. Jacobson, Ph.D, Lisa Lefferts and Anne Garland
"Acesulfame K, sold commercially as Sunette or Sweet One, was approved by the FDA in 1988 as a sugar substitute in packet or tablet form, in chewing gum, dry mixes for beverages, instant coffee and tea, gelatin desserts, puddings and nondairy creamers. The manufacturer has asked the FDA to approve acesulfame K for soft drinks and baked goods. The public is waiting for an artificial sweetener that is unquestionably safe. But this one isn't it. Even compared to aspartame and saccharin (which are afflicted with their own safety publems - see below), acesulfame K is the worst. The additive is inadequately tested, the FDA based its approval on tests of acesulfame K that fell short of the FDA's own standards. But even those tests indicate that the additive causes cancer in animals, which means it may increase cancer risk in humans. In l987, CSPI urged the FDA not to approve acesulfame K, but was ignored. After the FDA gave the chemical its blessing, CSPI urged that it be banned. The FDA hasn't yet ruled on that request."
From CSPI's web page:... acetoacetamide, a breakdown product, has been shown to affect the thyroid in rats, rabbits, and dogs. Administration of 1% and 5% acetoacetamide in the diet for three months caused benign thyroid tumors in rats. The rapid appearance of tumors raises serious questions about the chemicals carcinogenic potency."

Sucralose
Splenda, also known as sucralose, is artificial sweetener which is a chlorinated sucrose derivative. Facts about this artificial chemical follows:
Splenda, also known as sucralose, is artificial sweetener which is a chlorinated sucrose derivative. Facts about this artificial chemical follows:
Pre-Approval Research
Pre-approval research showed that sucralose caused shrunken thymus glands (up to 40% shrinkage) and enlarged liver and kidneys. The manufacturer put forth two arguments in an attempt to claim that sucralose is not toxic:
The dose of sucralose in the experiments was high. However, for chemicals that do not have generations of safe use, the dosage tested must be adjusted for variations in potential toxicity within the human population and between humans and rodents. In order to this, toxicologists estimate a variation of effects in the human population of 10 times. In other words, one person may not have effects until a dose of 10 mg per kg of body weight (10 mg/kg) is reached, while another person may have chronic toxicity effects at 1 mg per kg of body weight (1 mg/kg). In addition, it is well known that many chemicals are much more toxic in humans than in rodents (or even monkeys). For example, the chemicals that the sweetener aspartame breaks down into vary from 5 to 50 times more toxic in humans than in rodents. Therefore, toxicologists estimate a further 10 times the dose for differences between human and rodent toxicity for a total of 100 times (10 * 10). In order to estimate a potential safe dose in humans, one must divide the lowest dose in given to rodents that was seen to have any negative effects on their thymus glands, liver or kidneys by 100. That dose is then known as the maximum Tolerable Daily Intake (TDI) for lifetime use. Keep in mind that the TDI is just an estimate. Some chemicals are much more than 10 times more toxic in humans than in rodents (or will cause cancer in humans in low-dose, long-term exposure and do not cause cancer in rodents at all). A person ingesting the TDI for some chemical may find that it causes cancer or immune system or neurological problems after many years or decades of use. So, if the manufacturer claims that the dose was equivalent to 50 diet sodas, then the TDI would be one half (1/2) of a diet soda, and even that dose may or may not be safe. The manufacturer claimed that the sucralose was unpleasant for the rodents to eat in large doses. They said that starvation caused the shruken thymus glands. From the New Scientist (23 Nov 1991, pg 13):[Toxicologist Judith] Bellin reviewed studies on rats starved under experimental conditions, and concluded that their growth rate could be reduced by as much as a third without the thymus losing a significant amount of weight (less than 7 percent). The changes were much more marked in rats fed on sucralose. While the animals' growth rate was reduced by between 7 and 20 percent, their thymuses shrank by as much as 40 percent.
Recent Research
A possible problem with caecal enlargement and renal mineralization has been seen in post approval animal research.
Sucralose Breaks DownDespite the manufacturer's mis-statements, sucralose does break down into small amounts of 1,6-dichlorofructose, a chemical which has not been adequtely tested in humans.
Sucralose Breaks DownDespite the manufacturer's mis-statements, sucralose does break down into small amounts of 1,6-dichlorofructose, a chemical which has not been adequtely tested in humans.
Independent, Long-Term Human Research None.
Manufacturer's "100's of studies" (some of which show hazards) were clearly inadequate and do not demonstrate safety in long-term use.
Chlorinated Pesticides
The manufacturer claims that the chlorine added to sucralose is similar to the chlorine atom in the salt (NaCl) molecule. That is not the case. Sucralose may be more like ingesting tiny amounts of chlorinated pesticides, but we will never know without long-term, independent human research.
Conclusion
While it is unlikely that sucralose is as toxic as the poisoning people are experiencing from Monsanato's aspartame, it is clear from the hazards seen in pre-approval research and from its chemical structure that years or decades of use may contribute to serious chronic immunological or neurological disorders.
Addendum (October 2, 2000)
Ocassionally, persons emailing ask questions about sucralose research. What follows is a copy of a response one such question. The answer starts by summarizing the aspartame (NutraSweet) issue and then addresses the sucralose issue.
Let me start by saying that, as you may know, there is a quickly growing body of evidence demonstrating the toxicity of aspartame. This includes:
Recent European research showing that ingesting aspartame leads to the accumulation of formaldehyde in the brain, other organs and tissues (Formaldehyde has been shown to damage the nervous system, immune system, and cause irreversible genetic damage in humans.)
An extremely large number of toxicity reactions reported to the FDA and other organizations
A recent report showing that nearly 100% of independent research has found problems with aspartame. Why is this relevent to the sucralose question? Similar to the aspartame situation 15 years ago:
Pre-approval test indicated potential toxicity of sucralose.
There are no *independent* controlled human studies on sucralose (similar to 15 years ago for aspartame).
There are no long-term (12-24 months) human studies of sucralose's effects.
There is no monitoring of health effects. It took government agencies decades to agree that there were countless thousands of deaths from tobacco. Why? Simply because there had been no monitoring or epidemiological studies. Without such monitoring and studies, huge effects can easily go unnoticed. So, without even addressing the pre-approval research showing potential toxicity, it is clear that sucralose has

a) no long history (e.g., decades) of safe use,
b) no independent monitoring of health effects,
c) no long-term human studies, and
d) no independent human studies.
I would hope that the Precautionary Principal, now commonly used in Europe, would be a guiding force for people who are interested in health. Otherwise, we might as well just use any poorly-tested, artificial (lab-created) chemical that has shown potential for long-term toxicity.
As far as the pre-approval research related to sucralose.... As you probably know, pre-approval research is rarely published. It is only available from the FDA by filing a Freedom of Information Act request. However, you can see a very short summary regarding sucralose and shrunken thymus glands in the "New Scientist" (23 November 1991, page 13).
It is very important that people who have any interest in their health stay aware from the highly toxic sweetener, aspartame and other dangerous sweeteners such as sucralose (Splenda), and acesulfame-k (Sunette, Sweet & Safe, Sweet One).

Aspartame
In 1997 there was an increase in aspartame users reporting severe toxicity reactions and damage such as seizures, eye damage and vision loss, confusion, severe migraines, tremors, depression, anxiety attacks, insomnia, etc. In the same years, Ralph Walton, MD, Chairman, The Center for Behavioral Medicine showed that the only studies which didn't find problems with aspartame where those funded by the manufacturer (Monsanto). Given the agreement amongst independent scientists about the toxicity of aspartame, the only question was whether the formaldehyde exposure from aspartame caused the toxicity. That question has now been largely answered because of research in the late 1990s.The following facts shown by recent scientific research:Aspartame (nutrasweet) breaks down into methanol (wood alcohol).
Methanol quickly converts to formadehyde in the body.
Formaldehyde causes gradual and eventually severe damage to the neurological system, immune system and causes permanent genetic damage at extremely low doses.
Methanol from alcoholic beverages and from fruit and juices does not convert to formaldehyde and cause damage because there are protective chemicals in these traditionally ingested beverages.
The most recent independent research in Europe demonstrates that ingestion of small amounts of aspartame leads to the accumulation of significant levels of formaldehyde (bound to protein) in organs (liver, kidneys, brain) and tissues.
Excitotoxic amino acids such as the one which is immediately released from aspartame likely increases the damage caused by the formaldehyde.
Readers are urged to followup by printing and reading the extensive and heavily-referenced discussion related to aspartame and methanol/formaldehyde poisoning (suitable for scientists and laypersons) at: http://www.holisticmed.com/aspartame/abuse/. This document details the research showing formaldehyde toxicity from aspartame and demonstrates the techniques the manufacturer used to help hide these facts.

Toxicity Effects of Aspartame Use
Selection of adverse effects from short-term and/or long-Term use
Note: It often takes at least sixty days without *any* aspartame or nutrasweet to see a significant improvement. Improvement in health is also often accompanied by weight loss. Check all labels very carefully (including vitamins and pharmaceuticals). Look for the word "aspartame" on the label and avoid it. (Also, it is a good idea to avoid "acesulfame-k" or "sunette.") Finally, avoid getting nutrition information from junk food industry PR organizations such as IFIC or organizations that accept large sums of money from the junk and chemical food industry such as the American Dietetic Association.

Can be used during chemotherapy and radiation.
C. Quercetin
Most common flavonoid in the human diet.
Most effective flavonoid to inhibit tumor formation.
Keeps cancer cells from dividing. In human breast cancer cells, the presence of mutant p53 protein – a common cancer mutation – leads to uncontrolled cell growth and cancer. Quercetin suppresses the production of mutant p53 protein to nearly undetectable levels.
Inhibits enzymes known as tyrosine kinases. When activated, tyrosine kinases send powerful signals to the nucleus telling cancer cells it’s time to divide.
Inhibits cancer cell growth, but they don’t usually kill cancer cells.
The first tyrosine kinases-inhibiting compound ever tested in a human trial.
Further research is needed to determine which types of cancer are most likely to benefit from its use.

G. Polyerga (Polyerga Plus)
Highly purified extracts of peptides from the spleens of pigs.
Found by accident. In WWII, there was a shortage of pigs to extract insulin from their pancreases, including spleens. Walter Kuhlmey found that pig spleen extract had insulin-like activity, but it also increased energy. He started to sell it under the name of Polyerga.
In 1951, an oncologist started to treat a terminally ill patient who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, a cancer which is rarely overcome. The doctor gave her injections of Polyerga to ease her suffering. The results shocked the physician. Her pain was reduced, she had energy, she felt live again. She lived for another three years and died from causes unrelated to the cancer. At the autopsy, pathologists discovered the pancreatic tumor, once the size of an egg was completely gone.

You & Your Brain Waves
Often when people ask, "What is Alpha?", they are really asking, "What is Alpha good for?", and "What does Alpha mean to me?" Answering the first question leads into the other two.
What is Alpha? It is one of four basic brain waves [Delta, Theta, Alpha, and Beta], which make up the EEG, which is short for electroencephalogram. These are all oscillating electrical voltages in the brain, but they are very tiny voltages, just a few millionths of a volt. The Alpha waves oscillate about 10 time per second, and the range is 8-13 cycles per second. The brain waves called "Alpha" were the first to be discovered (around 1908, by an Austrian Psychiatrist named Hans Berger). That is why they are called "Alpha", they were first. Alpha is the first letter of the Greek alphabet, like our "a".
Many hundreds of scientists have spent a lot of time studying these basic brain waves of the EEG, so there is a lot of basic knowledge about what Alpha is and what makes it appear and disappear in our brains. Yes, Alpha appears and disappears. It is not always present. For example, in deep sleep there is no Alpha, and if someone is very highly aroused as in fear or anger, again there is virtually no Alpha.
Delta is seen only in the deepest stages of sleep (Stages 3 and 4). Theta is seen in light sleep and drowsiness (sleep stages 1 and 2). Alpha is seen in wakefulness where there is a relaxed and effortless alertness. Beta is seen in highly stressful situations, and where there is difficult mental concentration and focus.
Delta waves are the slowest oscillating waves (0-4 cycles per second). Theta waves oscillate somewhat faster (4-7 cycles per second). Alpha waves oscillate 8-13 times per second. Beta waves oscillate still faster (13-40 cycles per second). There are many other kinds of electrical activity in the brain, especially the short-lived evoked potentials that occur when the brain responds to sensory input (like a sound, or a touch, or a flash of light). However, the four basic EEG waves of Delta, Theta, Alpha, and Beta constitute the standard lineup of EEG activity.
The foregoing discussion makes the point that each of the four basic EEG waves is linked to a different state of consciousness. Each of the four types of waves is good for something different. However, we can get into trouble if we can not turn on the type of brain wave needed for the task at hand. For example, if we can not turn on Theta and Delta waves, we will suffer from insomnia, among other things. On the other hand, people who can turn on the ideal brain waves to deal with each and every situation are considered gifted.
One useful metaphor compares the four basic brain waves (Delta, Theta, Alpha, Beta) with the four gears on a car. Delta (the slowest wave) is first gear. Theta is second gear. Alpha is third gear. Beta is fourth gear. No one gear is best for every driving situation, and no one brain wave is best for all of the challenges of life. We get into trouble if one of the gears on our car goes out, or if we forget to use some of the gears. For example if we drive our car starting in first gear, and then shifting directly into fourth gear (skipping second and third), we will have low gas mileage and high repair bills. The same is true of our brains. Sadly, many people often skip their second and third brain gears (Theta and Alpha). The consequences of driving our brains in this manner are low productivity and high medical bills. How does this happen?
The way this occurs in everyday life can be illustrated by an example. People often wake up suddenly out of a deep sleep (Delta) with an alarm. Then they immediately feel stress and anxiety (Beta) about being late or being under time pressure. After insufficient sleep they pour caffeine down their throats to force themselves into (Beta) wakefulness, and the caffeine suppresses Theta and Alpha, while promoting Beta. All day they work under stress, pressure, and time urgency (Beta, Beta, and more Beta), until at night, they fall exhausted into deep sleep (Delta), having spent too little time unwinding, relaxing, and drowsing (which would have given them a bit more Alpha and Theta). Thus many people shift their brains suddenly and forcefully from Delta to Beta, and then back to Delta.
Alpha production is an innate skill of our brains, but one consequence of the modern stressful lifestyle is that we forget how to produce Theta and Alpha brain waves. Then we easily fall victim to anxiety and stress-related diseases. Anxiety and stress measurably reduce the strength of our immune systems. People who have more Alpha brain waves have less anxiety. Thus having more Alpha waves could mean less anxiety and, correspondingly, stronger immune systems, and this is good for everyone.
Creativity is another activity for which Alpha is helpful. Scientists have shown that highly creative people have different brain waves from normal and non-creative people. In order to have a creative inspiration, your brain needs to be able to generate a big burst of Alpha, mostly on the left side of the brain. The brains of creative people can generate these big Alpha bursts, and do so when they are faced with problems to solve. Normal and non-creative people do not produce Alpha increases when they are faced with problems, and so they can not come up with creative ideas and solutions. Any time you have an insight or an inspiration, you know your brain just produced more Alpha waves than usual. Increased creativity is helpful for everyone.
Peak performance is another activity for which Alpha is helpful. Recently sports scientists have shown that increases of Alpha brain waves (often in the left side of the brain) precede peak performance. One key difference between novice and elite athletes is in their brain waves. Just before his best free throws, an elite basketball player will produce a burst of Alpha on the left side of their brain. Just before their best strokes, elite golfers will produce a burst of Alpha in their left brain. Just before their best shots, elite marksmen and archers will produce a burst of Alpha in their left brains. Novice and intermediate athletes do not show this Alpha pattern. However, one study of archers training over many weeks, showed that as they improved their performance, they gradually increased the amount of left brain Alpha which occurred just before their best shots. The Alpha brain waves seemed to be essential for peak performance and were increased, albeit slowly, by the archery training.
What does Alpha mean to me? If you want to feel less stress and anxiety, you should increase the amount of your Alpha waves. This may also improve the strength of your immune systems, since stress weakens the immune systems. If you want to be more creative, you should learn how to increase the amount of your Alpha waves. If you want to have more peak performance in athletic activity, and in other areas of your life, you should learn how to increase the amount of your Alpha waves. Some people are born healthy and mellow and gifted with creativity and athletic prowess. But what if you are not so lucky?
So how does one increase Alpha brains wave naturally. In the area of supplements, an amino acid from Green tea called L-Theanine increases Alpha brain waves naturally.
L-Theanine is useful for:
Inducing relaxation
Lowering Stress
Reducing anxiety levels
Decreasing hypertension
Increasing mental acuity
Improving learning ability and performance
Increase concentration
Lowering blood pressure
L-Theanine takes effect within 30 minutes after ingestion and there are no known cautions or drug interactions.
Stress and anxiety are debilitating conditions that can shorten life span while lessening performance, well being and the enjoyment of life. Stress can impair the ability to perform mentally. It may result in reactions to situations that cause enhanced frustration, hostility or even injury. Stress slowly destroys the immune system, lowering resistance to disease and thus allowing degenerative and opportunistic diseases to occur. Stress causes depression. The entire population is subjected to stress. In a 1998 survey, nearly 65% of the adult population indicated that they were under great stress. More than 23 million Americans suffer from anxiety illness.
L-Theanine is a unique free form amino acid found only in the tea plant and in the mushrooms Xerocomus badius and certain species of genus Camellia, C. japonica and C. sasanqua. L-Theanine is a relaxant that increases alpha-waves producing mental and physical relaxation decreasing stress and anxiety, without inducing drowsiness. Based on the results of clinical studies, it has been established that L-Theanine is effective in single dosages in the range of 50-200mg. It is suggested that subjects with higher levels of anxiety take a dose at the higher end of the effective range (100-200mg) for best results.
Biologically Active – In addition to relaxation, research suggests that L-Theanine may have application in:
Controlling high blood pressure
Improving learning performance
Heightening mental acuity – neurotransmitter
Promotes concentration
Acting antagonistically against the paralysis induced by caffeine
Supporting the immune system
Lowering blood pressure
Increases blood dopamine levels among other positive benefits with no known downside
Documented Safety
L-Theanine is considered to be safe based on its historical use as a component of green tea on favorable toxicology studies. Green tea is the most consumed beverage worldwide after water, and has been consumed for thousands of years by billions of people. It is estimated that a heavy green tea drinker (6-8 cups daily) will consume between 200-400mg of L-Theanine daily.
What if your alpha waves are too high? The herb Kava Kava can help reduce alpha brain waves. Alpha allows us to be calm and alert, but will not allow us to fall asleep. Kava Kava, a South Pacific herb can reduce alpha waves and allow us to fall asleep.
For a restful sleep it is important that your serotonin level (neurotransmitter) is as high as possible. Serotonin increases a feeling of well-being, which helps to slow down and to initiate a calm peaceful sleep. Directly related to the production of serotonin is the production of melatonin, a hormone which is known for its sleep-inducing effect. Serotonin and melatonin use the same building blocks: L-Tryptophan. Basically everything that we have discussed, and will be discussing relating to feeling good, is applicable to helping you improve your sleep cycle as well.
Who needs increased alpha waves? We all do. We would all be able to tolerate the stress in this world more effectively. Adults could be more forgiving and friendlier. Children with ADD and ADHD can be better students and have better behavior with increased alpha brain waves. In reality, we live in a Beta brain world full anxiety and stress. We need to be Alpha people.

What is Kinesiology and how can it help you?
Kinesiology is a method of maintaining health by ensuring that all the muscles of the body are functioning correctly. It is believed that each of the muscles is connected with a specific part of the body such as the digestive system, circulation of the blood and specific organs. If a muscle is not working correctly this will cause a problem in its related part of thebody.
Kinesiology originated in 1964 and was developed by an American chiropractor called George Goodheart. Whilst treating a patient for a severe pain in the leg he found that massaging a particular muscle in the upper leg relieved the pain and at the same time strengthened the muscle. However when he used the same method on different muscles the results were not the same. Previous research done by an osteopath called Dr Chapman found that there were certain 'pressure points' in the body that were connected with particular muscles. Chapman found which point was connected to each particular muscle and realised that when he had massaged the patients upper leg muscle, the pain had decreased. The pressure point for that leg muscle was the only one that was situated above the actual muscle. All the other points were not close to the part of the body with which they were connected.
In the 1930's an osteopath called Terence Bennett claimed that were similar pressure points located on the skull. If light pressure was applied to these pressure points the flow of blood to the related organs could be assisted. George Goodheart tested this claim and found that if finger tip pressure was only applied for a few seconds the strength of a particular muscle was improved. He was able to locate sixteen points on the head, back of the knee and on the breastbone that were all linked to groups of important muscles. To further his studies Goodheart applied himself to acupuncture, which is a form of healing that also makes use of certain points on the body but that run along paths known as meridians. He came to the conclusion that these meridians could be used for both muscles and organs.
The paths used in kinesiology are exactly the same as the paths used for acupuncture. A kinesiologist will examine a patient and attempt to discover if there is any physical disorder, lack of energy or bad nutrition that is causing problems. When the problem areas have been located, a light massage will be applied to the relevant pressure points (usually not close to the associated muscles). In kinesiology it is maintained that the use of pressure points works because the flow of blood to the muscles is stimulated. This will ensure that a supply of lymph is generated as well; lymph is a watery fluid that takes toxins away from the tissues.
As with acupuncture it is believed that that there is an unseen flow of energy running through the body. When this flow of energy is disrupted due to a person being ill or suffering from stress, the body will become weak because insufficient energy is being produced. Testing the strength of the muscles will provide information on the flow of energy and help in assessing the general health of the patient. It is claimed that by finding any imbalance and correcting it, kinesiology can be used as a preventative therapy. If a person is feeling tired all the time it is believed that this condition is made worse by the the slow flow of internal body fluids such as the circulation of blood. Kinesiologists are able to teat this problem by stimulating the flow of lymph and blood by massaging the pressure points.
It is claimed that kinesiology can be of benefit to those people who suffer from phobias or irrational fears. An example of this is the recommendation that the bone beneath the eye, level with the pupil, is softly tapped. Neck and back pain can be treated without any need for manipulation of joints. Massaging of the muscle that is located in the inner thigh can be of benefit for muscles that are weak as they are a reason for a painful back.
Kinesiology is is also used by practitioners of homoeopathy, herbalism and osteopathy. Therefore if there is a problem that is connected to ligaments, muscles or bones, it may well be advisable to contact a osteopath or chiropractor who is also qualified in kinesiology. If the problem is of a emotional or mental nature, then it may be advisable to contact a psychotherapist or counsellor who is also practises kinesiology.
